York's Chocolate Story Reviews
All that was missing was oompa loompas !!!! Aug 24, 2015
We couldn't resist having a look around a chocolate factory during our time in York - after all York is the place that introduced such delights as Terry's Chocolate Orange and the famous Kit Kat, and is now home to Nestle/Rowntree chocolate.
We were taken on our tour by a very informative guide (think modern day Willy Wonka) he was a bit eccentric and I had to giggle when we were taken into a very small room, with wallpaper that had decorative doors all around - next thing we had chocolate samples waved under our noses as our guide informed us of the chocolate journey beginning thousands of years ago in Central America, before continuing with the story continuing through the 18 century when it was embraced by York's Quaker families who opened up their very own cocoa houses and chocolate shops.
The story centered around the families Tuke, Rowntree, Terry and Craven - and how they introduced chocolate to the city of York. We were led from room to room, each room different to the previous, and samples galore too, we learned how to taste chocolate like an expert, by basically letting the chocolate melt on your tongue, whilst trying to distinguish each particular flavour (a bit like wine tasting!) we were then led through an interactive zone, where we got the opportunity to make our very own chocolate lollipop with sprinkles and finally we got to see a professional chocolatier at work - all that was missing was the oompa loompas!!!
Very cleverly the exit is out via the souvenir shop, where every conceivable flavour of chocolate is on sale, together with more traditional souvenirs of fridge magnets and the like.
A great way to spend an hour or two - even if you don't like chocolate, it's great for its historical information.
