York Overview

Named after its counterpart in England, York is the White Rose City in Pennsylvania. Located just across the Susquehanna River from Lancaster, it’s Red Rose sister from the infamous War of the Roses from the homeland (a great theme for high school football clashes here). York has developed a diverse economic base and holds a compelling history.

The history harkens back to revolutionary days, when York served as the temporary home for the Continental Congress (fleeing from Philadelphia) and was the place where the Articles of Confederation were ratified. Immediately before tread morehe Gettysburg turning point, York was the largest town occupied by southern troops during the Civil War.

Today York retains a rural air despite being the home for several large industrial sites…most notably the York Barbell facility and one of Harley-Davidson’s major production plants. One shouldn’t be surprised that the weightlifting hall of fame is also located here!
