My last day in York was the sort of day that holidays are made of. Beautiful sunshine, perfect for me to start my day off with a visit to the Jorvik Centre. I can't say that I was most impressed by this place as it's a bit too small and I thought the ride was a bit too short. I went walking around the town again (I love this town) and stopped by the gorgeous Clifford's Tower and spent some time in the lawn around the Museum. I didn't go into the Museum because I was running out of time a...

Finally there!!! Finally back in my beloved England!!! I don't know what it is about that country but I just love the people, the landscapes, the accent, the Pubs (though not the food and the beer too much ;)). Just feels like coming home whenever I am there ... So this time I am coming home with two of my guys to visit a friend who is currently in York for a research project. We decided to rent a car from Stansted on just to be more flexible and comfi. As my friends now about my excep...

I travelled down the east coast to as far as Hull and then headed west towards York.
The driving was very green and beautiful and reaching York I was immediately struck with just how delightful this city is.
It's bustling, colourful, exceptionally green and extremely well preserved.
I wandered right around the city centre several times snapping away mad at all the cute and quant little old buildings. The city looks as though it hasnt been altered in a couple hundred years. And I applaud t...

Hello! I was lucky enough to go to York yesterday (with Peter). It was
really nice to be in a larger city...I mean I love Durham, but
sometimes you just need something a big bigger to take off the edge of
claustrophobia: York was a perfect solution. It's only 45 min away on
the train, which is nice. I went about visiting just as I usually do,
without much of a plan, just taking it all in. It was really cool,
right after you get out of the train station, you walk right through
the old c...

The Sacking Of York: 10/22-23/07 Just as William Wallace once knocked the gates of York down and sacked the city I too now enter this fine city, all be it with much less fan fair. The train ride up from London went relatively smooth. This is the first time I am riding in 2nd class or as the British call it; Standard Class. I would have gone 1st class this trip but many of the more northern routes only have standard class so I did not want to waste the money. I jumped on th...

Early in the morning, I validated my BritRail pass and caught the first train down to York, England. The train ride was beautiful and we passed through some of the other towns on the way (Durham and Newcastle, I want to say). Finally, we reached York. Edinburgh has been around for a long time, but York has even more history! The first thing I did was head into one of the few (or perhaps only) hostel in town, and I was able to get a bed for the night. After droppi...

Today we walked from our B&B to the walled inner city of York. It's about 1/2 mile from our B&B to the Monk Gate, so named because its near the Minster and was used by the monks.York Minster is a fascinating gothic cathedral, even more impressive than Westminster Abbey. They let us take pictures inside, and we climbed a very narrow spiral staircase to the top of the tower to get a view of York. They also had a crypt tour that used audio devices to describe the histor...

It was standing room only on the train to York. Upon arrival, I discovered the YHA was off the map, so I ended up at the cheaper and more central York Youth Hotel, where I met two New Zealander girls, Kate and Emma. Together we explored the thorough and well-presented exhibits of the Castle Museum. We then checked out the less than spectacular York Minster, which looked much more elaborate from the outside. To pass the time, we walked the length of the city wall before...
