Mmmm Knishes - Yonah Schimmel's Knish Bakery Aug 27, 2008
If you're in the lower east side, jump into Yonah Schimmel's for a taste of history. This place has been open since 1910 and serves up a fresh Jewish comfort food, the knish. Knishes are made of potato flour, instead of wheat flour and come with various stuffings. You can take the savory route and get a sweet potato, kasha or mushroom knish, or you could go the sweet route and get a cheese and fruit knish. I guess the closest mainstream relative of the sweet knish would be the brioche. A knish will set you back about 3 bucks and will keep you full for the better part of the day. Adorning the walls of the joint are photos of past customers, including Larry David and Woody Allen.

Make sure to stop by if you're in the hood.
