Yolyn Am Reviews
A green valley with ice in the middle of the desert! Aug 25, 2011
In the middle of the dry and barren land of the Godi Desert lies the extraordinary landscape of Yolyn Am (Vulture’s Mouth). When driving towards this beautiful area, all of a sudden everything turns green and lush. Nothing here will remind you that you are in fact still in the middle of a desert. The surroundings are still rough with high grey rocks, but there are also lots wide areas of thick grass.
When at Yolyn Am, there’s one likely thing to do and that is to hike the rocky path back and forth across a small stream of water towards the highlight of Yolyn Am: a gorge that is filled with ten metres of ice from September to June. The hike is a few kilometres and will take about 45 minutes one way. If you happen to be there in July or August, like I was, there will be no ice in the gorge, just running water. The hike is still very worth the trouble though, it is a beautiful walk through green hills and you’ll see lots of animals (large predatory birds flying by and rodents that resemble a match between a marmot (groundhog) and a squirrel).
