Yellowknife Overview

Yellowknife is the capital of the Northwest Territories (Canada) located on the Great Slave Lake and is part of the Canadian Arctic. Yellowknife is probably most well known for its Polar Bear shaped license plates (awarded most recognizable plate in the world) and a street called Ragged Ass Road.

A major destination for many Japanese tourists in the winter, on the dark, clear nights you can witness the beautiful multicolour show of the Northern Lights (Aurora Borealis) right in your backyard. It is a plus since the city gets roughly 5-8 hours of darkness in the early winter months (December-January) and a haven for golf-lovers in the summer time with 15-22 hours of sunlight (May-July)

Shopping is not the cheapest as most items were imported in from Edmonton or other parts of Canada. But if you have money, check out the fur coats and the diamonds in these parts. Yellowknife is home to some of the major diamond mines in the world.
