Yellowknife Vacation Guide
Yellowknife is the capital of the Northwest Territories (Canada) located on the Great Slave Lake and is part of the Canadian Arctic. Yellowknife is probably most well known for its Polar Bear shaped license plates (awarded most recognizable plate in the world) and a street called Ragged Ass Road.
A major destination for many Japanese tourists in the winter, at 40 to 50 below zero, you can witness the beautiful multicolour show of the Northern Lights (Aurora Borealis) right in your backyard. It is a plus since the city gets roughly 10 to 11 hours of darkness in the winter months (4-6 months) and a haven for golf-lovers in the summer time with 10-11 hours of sunlight.
It also offers some of the best places to snowmobile including frozen lakes and rivers that allows you to pick up speed in a very short time.
Yellowknife is also home to some of the best Northern delicacies like Mux-Ox adn Caribou amongst many others. One hsould not miss Pilot's Landing if you desire these delicacies. But if Northern delicacy is not your thing, amazingly, Yellowknfe is also home to many Asian immigrants (mainly Vietnamese) that brought thier cooking to the area. There are a number of great Pho restaurants in the area.
Shopping is not the cheapest as most items were imported in from Edmonton or other parts of Canada. But if you have money, check out the fur coats and the diamonds in these parts. Yellowknife is home to some of the major diamond mines in the world.
