Yangshuo a must see in China Jan 03, 2014
Yangshuo is a must visit for China, preferably your first stop as it is a place to hang out and get info. & arrange onward travel. You will meet both travelers and locals who speak english. Its is a very soft introduction to China where everything is so easy.

Getting there: From Hk take the MTR to the border walk into Shenzen and take a train to Guilin for about 2ooy, night sleeper buses about the same but the roads are allways being repaired for long stretches at a time and the tiny bunk bed is not nice. They are also over loaded with locals sleeping in the Aisle ways. Also u will get ripped off by touts for bus tickets up to 250y. Even is you know what your doing take a minbus to a loccal bus station 20 mins way the big bus price will not be under 200. And just for fun the night bus arrives in Yangshuo at around 5am and dumps you on the outskirts of town in various locations, 20 min walk into town or transport boys waiting.

Going from yangshou to Canton or Shenzen by bus is cheaper than the 2 night train's that u have to go to guilin for. The rugged night bus tickets vary from 120y to 200y depending who you know. The midday bus from Yangshuo to shenzen or canton for 150y is a winner. ( aircon bus canton to shenzen less than 3 hours was about 65Y )

Yangshuo is surrounded by beautiful limestone pinnacles and the Li River. Located in south east China. You Can fly into Guilin. Yangshuo is 65 km way, 1h 20 min by bus away. Yangshuo is over touristed by Chinese, but you will soon overlook that when you realize you can ride a push bike into the countryside in a few minutes.

Best time to go is March, April or september to Early December where latter in the month will be 0 to 5C. It,s hot tropical summer but a temperate winter. If you go in the 2 ''Golden weeks'' May and September, these are 10 day national holidays, the time when ALL chinese are on holiday, expect to crowd surf, a crazy extremely expensive time to be there.

Accommodation starts at 40 Yuan a day for Dorm. Rooms start at 80 yuan a day.

Food, eating with locals starts at 6 to 20 yuan. In a western style restaurant 20 yuan upwards.

Attractions and things to do are unlimited, you will never see or do it all.

Tipps: Guilin deserves i night (get the late bus back to Yangshuo ) to see the lights, spend your time in Yangshuo. Guilin is a city shopping destination not a place to stay. In Guilin go to the central bus terminal ( walking distance from train station---train station has mini buses to yangshuo same price ) to get a 22 yuan ticket to Yangshuo.

Sep 2013 local wages increased from 600y to 1200y Per Month in last 3 years. So prices have increased.

A monthly chinese family hotel room is now 700y up per month , expect fan ensuite internet, hot water shower, if aircon u pay for electricity usage. ask locals to guide u. You wont find this price by yourself, find english students to help you translate.

GAN NOODELS have dumplings 6y 10 pieces. Chow Fan ( special fried rice ) 10y. Pot green tea 5y Fast free WIfi.

Ask local students where Clay pot restaurant is, vegies start at 12y and up to 20y

Cup coffee take out cheapest 10y nice classy cup in coffee shop 19y to 30y

If on tiny budget u can teach english ( u just need to be a native speaker. it's conversational english. ) for a couple of hours a day to get free room, share with one other and get 2 free meals a day. Nice to make western and Chinese friends.

In shenzen road many pick & choose as u want meals, wait for it to be cooked 10y plate. Tasty street noodles near lotus pond 7y open to 4am

See you in Yangshuo one of my Asian Bases where i live

Guilin is pretty at night, the lakes, the water displays and lights, also the ''waterfall hotel'' imagine a water fall over the face of a 8 story building, amazing, it's off the big square, go to reception to what time the free performances are happening, should she people looking up after dark, waiting. Just make sure you don't miss the last bus to Yangshuo.
