At 7 AM, all of us were already up and ready to go to the airport. By 7:30 AM, we were already at the airport. By 8:00 AM, we were already got our plane seats confirmed. By 8:30 AM, we were already relieved to pass the immigration gate.. until we realized we had no breakfast. Also, thinking that any airport in the whole world would have anything for us to eat. Again, the junta has let us down, even to the last minutes. We were all silent, we were already thinking of food in the airplane. …

Our alarm clock is in desperate need of attention at 7 am, ending our dreams in a matter of seconds. We’ve slept like babies and with a wonderfull breakfast in our bellies, according to Aart-Jan the best we’ll get in all Myanmar, we head into the city. Our quest today is to discover Yangon and find out what everyday’s life is all about here.
Yangon is known to have quite some colonial style buildings and the Strand Hotel, our first objective, is a famous landmark. We go there on foot, …

I am yet to complete my blog entry for my trip on Myanmar, but i decided to write this small entry/plea already.I landed on Yangon,Myanmar and was put on awe with its beauty, the land is rich in culture and the burmese people are one of the warmest people i ever met. This week i left Yangon in a devastated state. The area was hardly hit by the cyclone, from what the locals says, it is the strongest in 50 years. Along with my friends and sister, we were in the road as the cyclone unleashes …

monday, 7am:
we packed up early and went with our travel agent. it was the same
scene as yesterday. only this time, there were more people. tourists,
locals, they were all around. the airlines were open! woohoo!!the
only problem was, our supposedly 10am flight delayed (again!) for three
hours. we hadn't had breakfast and there was no canteen at the airport.
we had one loaf of bread for six people. the only thing we were looking
forward to was the in-flight meal when we got onboard.1pm:…

People i met here who contributed to, and improved my trip: Julia (Russia)
After jumping on the local bus from the long distance bus staion to Sule Paya, the first thing i saw when looking out of the window was a man having sex with the hood of a car. I wasn't quite sure i'd seen correct, so turned to Julia who was looking open mouthed at me - i took this as confirmation! Our evening was spent catching up on internet, which we hadn't had proper access to for weeks.
The following day it was …

It’s difficult not to be political about Myanmar. Not
when the whole time I was there, I can’t access the internet nor avail
of international publications (except for the Singapore Straits Times.
which I’m sorry to say isn’t really my idea of in-depth reportage)
because the military junta isn’t exactly press friendly. Not when the
only report I hear or read about Myanmar is about the repressive military regime and the widespread poverty in Myan…

After almost 20 years, it was good to be back to see Yangon again (28-30 Jul 2008). The place has changed quite abit, testimony to the investments that have been poured in by countries in the region. The infrastructure has been upgraded, more cars on the road and a large number of new buildings have sprung up. There seems to be many hotels in Yangon, yet another evidence of the influx of business people. The L'Opera restaurant is in a bungalow nestled in the midst of other houses.…

After taking the whole of 26 Oct travelling back to Yangon and seeing all the Pagodas and Buddhas i can take for the week, I've decided to go to a small town across the Yangon river to see other things. I paid USD1 for a 20min ferry ride across the man-made carnal... the water is as chaotic as the street. You have big ships, ferries, small boats, fisherman's boat all trying to make their way across to the small town named Dalla. Interesting. From there, I hopped onto one of the trucks …

I accidently slept in this morning, was supposed to wake up at 6:30am so I could get ready to leave for the airport at 7:00am, but I didn't wake up till 7:20 and my check-in time was 7:40am :S. Luckily the horse cart ride to the airport was smooth as silk.Arriving in Yangon at 9:45am, I caught a taxi into town for a whopping $6US (yes I know I got ripped off, but the taxi driver was being a tight ass). As I entered Yangon I instantly disliked it, Yangon is definately my least favourite site i…

We flew with Air Asia from Bangkok to Yangon. We stayed at the White House Hotel in the downtown area of the city. The rooms were reasonable and we enjoyed the filling breakfast, especially the home made jam. There are only a couple of sights in Yangon but it was nice to look at the market areas and try out the local restaurants. In particular Bogyoke market was very hectic and interesting and we found a particularly good beer station that served Dagon beer and nice fo…
