Yadkinville is a small agricultural town in the foothills of the Appalachian mountains in northeastern North Carolina. Mainly a tobacco and textiles town, the residents of the town usually travel to the neighboring city of Winston-Salem for work.
Being in the reach of the Bible belt has greatly affected the political and religious views of the town. Up until 2006, no beer or liquor had been sold in the town for more than 80 years. Wine was sold, but only since 2003, and only if wine making was your business. The town is currently involved in a legal dispute with the ACLU over the use of Jesus' name in the opening prayer of the county commissioners' meetings.
The 2,000 town residents, along with 28,000 county residents, attend or send their children to one of eight elementary schools (K-8) and then on to one of two high schools. Starmount, with around 600 students, is know for its division I-A football program. The other high school, aptly named Forbush for this staunchly Republican county, boasts several state championships in girls division I-AA volleyball and softball, as well as several national championships in hunter's safety.
The rolling hills and Carolina-blue skies make Yadkinville a safe and relaxed place, great for raising a family. However there is little opportunity for anyone hoping for a more adventurous life.
