Xunantunich is a Mayan ruin that is located around San Ignacio. To get there you have to cross the river by a small ferry. If taking a personal vehicle, you will have to walk about a mile until the entrance. If with a tour company, you will be able to ride to the entrance.

The second largest pyramid in Belize, El Castillo rises 130 km in the air. You can easily climb this pyramid and when looking out can see Guatemala. This is also a good place to do some birding, with toucans flying around in the afternoon.

While this isn't the most impressive ruin, it is nicely situated and a good stop over if you are within the area.

Semester at Sea sometimes runs quick reunion trips for alumni and their friends/family. One of my friends was an SASer and decided she wanted to go with them to Belize this winter. I tagged along. The entire thing was only four days, one of which was spent on land. To make the most of it, we did a packaged excursion to Xunantunich, a Mayan site near the Guatamalan border. Also included are a few photos from the ship and the harbor of Belize City where we landed.
