Near San Ignacio (within walking distance of the lodge) lies one of the most important Mayan sites in Belize: Xunantunich.
To get there we had to cross the Río…

7 days were not enough. I saw two Mayan ruins, visited a rain forest, ate the local food, spent some in time in the famous San Pedro - La Isla Bonita, ate ice cream at Spanish look out and soooo much more.... But its late so I'm going to have to update this blog later tomorrow. For now just enjoy the photos, and just know that I had such a wonderful time that I'm already planning another trip next summer or spring.

Semester at Sea sometimes runs quick reunion trips for alumni and their friends/family. One of my friends was an SASer and decided she wanted to go with them to Belize this winter. I tagged along. The entire thing was only four days, one of which was spent on land. To make the most of it, we did a packaged excursion to Xunantunich, a Mayan site near the Guatamalan border. Also included are a few photos from the ship and the harbor of Belize City where we landed.

After arriving in Belize City and traveling to Benque with Robert on the 9th I was exhausted, so we took it easy for the night. On Tuesday (my birthday), Robert took me to my first of 3 ruin visits on my trip. Xunantunich Archeological Reserve is about a 10 minute drive and a 2 minute ferry ride fr…

Since I had a rental car, I decided to put it to use seeing some nearby Mayan temples like Xunantunich, and waterfalls in the area. We also stopped at a butterfly farm to see the fantastic Banana Owl butterflies (their patterns look exactly like an owl's eye!). I've been been to many bu…

From 2001-'03 I served as a Peace Corps Volunteer at Hol Chan Marine Reserve in San Pedro, Ambergris Caye, Belize. I acted as the biologist and environmental outreach coordinator for HCMR. It was a very fulfilling experience. Belize and San Pedro will always hold a little piece of my heart.
