Great shopping hangout Feb 23, 2012
Many local youths visit Xi Men Ding after school, and it's not hard to see why.

It's quite a huge shopping area, enough to keep you occupied for a night, with shops ranging from shoe stores, clothing stores, food stalls to hair salons. There is also a Cold Stone Creamery at the 'entrance' of XMD.

The items on sale are pretty cheap and definitely worth buying. I got a pair of awesome boots at 800TWD four years ago and it's still in good condition! I also got some pretty ballet flats for 200TWD and they lasted me two years, which is a pretty good deal.

However many shops tend to have "repeated" items, i.e. stores tend to sell the same designs of clothes, bags, or shoes, so do look around to check out the pricing before making a purchase. It's kind of like Bugis Street in Singapore, if you've been there.

It's not very crowded though, unless you happen to go into one of the more popular stores. The streets are wide and not teeming with people even though XMD is still really lively at night.

I visited XMD 3 times during my month-long stay in Taipei, when I was in my late teens. If you're older (i.e. more than 40 years old) you might want to only spend a few hours here because XMD is mostly catered to the younger crowd!

Best place for the younger crowd :) Jul 08, 2012
XiMenDing is always one of my favourite places to visit when I'm in Taiwan! It has everything that a young person would want when hanging out with friends. There are a lot of great food stands in the area that are cheap and delicious. Tons of shopping, both semi-high end in the department stores nearby, and extremely cheap in the small stores around the area.

XiMenDing is also well known for the number of movie theatres that are in the area. It's cheaper than going to places like Miramar, and students get discounts :) In late spring, there are also showings of student work from film students in Taiwan happening in XiMenDing.

Most of the stores in the area close at around 10PM, but if you wait for another half hour, a lot of street sellers will appear in XiMenDing (this is because there are less police in the area after 10:30PM so there's a smaller chance of getting caught selling things on the street).

There are also many street performers and street artists in the area that are fun see!

Nice place to buy cheap stuff and hangout at night May 22, 2011
Ximending is one of the oldest areas in Taipei city, it's busy 7 days a week, this is where young people like to hangout, after school or on weekends.

it's basically a shopping center, with cheap clothes, cheap street food, movie theaters, and loads of entertainments.

a small part of the area was reconstructed couple years ago, turning an old building and the land around it into an art center, where yound designers and artists have their own little stores to sell their arts. it's called the "Red Building". one of the main attractions in the area.

if you want get a feel of what Taiwanese lifestyle is like, this is the place to be.

This place in Taipei, Taiwan is huge for shopping and eating. Over at Ximending, you can find a lot of exotic taste like smelly beancurd, fried octopus, deep-fried pig colon etc... Shopping-wise, the latest fashion wear in Taiwan can also be found there.
