Xigatse aka Shigatse (meaning Fertile Land) is the 2nd largest city in Tibet. The city is located at an altitude of 3840 m above sea level at the confluence of the holy Brahmaputra and Nyangchu rivers.
Xigatse has always plaid an important religious role. The Tashilhunpo Monastery is the original seat of the Panchen Lama, the second most important spiritual figure in Tibet. The monastery was built by the first Dalai Lama in the year 1447 and was reconstructed by the fourth Panchen Lama and since then it has been the seat of Panchen Lamas.
Inside the monastery one can see the Maitreya chapel. The main hall houses the biggest statue of the sitting Maitreya Buddha. It towers up to 26.2 m and is ornamented with huge quantity of gold, pearls and jewels. Go to the top floor from where you will get the best views of the magnificent Buddha statue.
