Xigaze (aka Shigatse), the city is at 12792 feet, the 2nd largest city in Tibet. It's the capital of the Xigaze prefecture which has a population of about 650000. In the past, it was the capital of western Tibet.

It is the seat of the 2nd most important Lama in Tibet, the Panchen Lama and the large monastery Tashilumpo. There are a lot of hiking opportunities around the monastery and outside of the city offering great workout and views.

Kum Bum, sunglasses misadventure, Tashilumpo monastery

In the morning, we checked out of the hotel and went to  visit the Palkor Chioide, a walled monastery complex in Gyantse where each of the four major sects of Tibetan Buddhism had temples and small monasteries.  There were lots of dogs here, lounging around in the sun. We would see many dogs in Tibet. What struck us was that how these dogs were well behaved, that is, like dogs.  They may not all be pets, but were obviously fed by somebody or they may have found enough food arou...

    Originally we only planned on staying one day and rent a jeep and driver on tuesday 12th but Mark, our other room mate, was going with 2 others on Wednesday.   lAnd 3000 yuan/kr is better divided on 6 than 3 so an extra day we stayed. Which was a great idea anyway,  cause then we had one day to look around at everything and another to know where to go to get the good stuff. Oh! And the goggles! Monasteries are plentiful throughout Tibet and it was interesting for us to visit one of the largest in Shigatse - Deprung Monastery. Again we witnessed the sincere religious devotion of the Tibetan people.   However, much as the visits to the cultural and religious places were interesting, we enjoyed more the Tibetan nature and magnificent sceneries.
