In the morning, we checked out of the hotel and went to visit the Palkor Chioide, a walled monastery complex in Gyantse where each of the four major sects of Tibetan Buddhism had temples and small monasteries. There were lots of dogs here, lounging around in the sun. We would see many dogs in Tibet. What struck us was that how these dogs were well behaved, that is, like dogs. They may not all be pets, but were obviously fed by somebody or they may have found enough food arou...

Originally we only planned on staying one day and rent a jeep and driver on tuesday 12th but Mark, our other room mate, was going with 2 others on Wednesday.
lAnd 3000 yuan/kr is better divided on 6 than 3 so an extra day we stayed. Which was a great idea anyway, cause then we had one day to look around at everything and another to know where to go to get the good stuff. Oh! And the goggles! Impossible to describe, but if you want a sneak peek, check out Miria...

Monasteries are plentiful throughout Tibet and it was interesting for us to visit one of the largest in Shigatse - Deprung Monastery. Again we witnessed the sincere religious devotion of the Tibetan people.
However, much as the visits to the cultural and religious places were interesting, we enjoyed more the Tibetan nature and magnificent sceneries. We had a memorable visit to Yomdrok Lake which is one of the three holy lakes on the Tibetan Plateau. This huge lake spans 130 kil...

So with the area between Lhasa and the border officially open again and our jeep convoy all ready to go we headed west from Lhasa. The two main towns we visited over these few days were Shigatse and Gyantse... I cant remember which they were in! Yeah its ages ago now my blogging catchup attempt started well but then fell away again :(
Ill pretend for now that Shigatse was definately first. Its Tibets second biggest city, and its main draw is the monastery which we visited on o...

We were fortunate to get an English speaking driver for our Toyota Landcruiser; Dong Dzu a native Tibetian who has his roots in a village just south of Lhasa. We wanted to go to Nam-Tso lake but that was impossible as we had limited time; we could get there probably but the risk of being snowed in was a too great gamble to take so we went to the Yam-Drok lake instead. Dong-Dzu our driver assured us that we could visit Yam-Drok lake and reach Shigatse the same day as there was a shortcut so we...

6/20/07After leaving our Tsampa man on the road between Gyantse and Shigatse we cruised our way for the relatively short drive into town and pulled up at the Everest Guest House which we expected would be a bit more downscale than our previous Tibetan accommodations. Lucky for us said Tenzin, they were overbooked and so his company had told him to put us up at a better place that was previously owned by the Panchan Lama, the second in command next to the Dalai Lama. This ended up being a pret...
