Terracotta Warriors

Royal Gardens & Huaqing Palace The royal gardens and hot springs were next to the Warriors so we stopped to walk around the garden. There are a few buildings that the emperors used as a place to relax and getaway. The Chinese used the hot springs and created indoor bathhouses 3000 years ago. It’s worth a walk around especially since its close by to the warriors. The Dayan Pagoda Best known Buddhist Temple in Xian. It is 7 stories tall and was built in 650. For $4 you can go inside a…

Luoyang to Xian China
posted by:
May 11, 2007 - May 25, 2007
Today was going to be a big day in Xian. We decided to go down town and checkout a few of the sights.  Xian has an old city part that is completely walled in. This is where most of the historical areas are. We first went to the main square and checked out both the bell tower and drum tower. We got a taxi from down town Xian to the Terra Cotta Warriors. Unfortunately we got a taxi with an older Chinese man who indicated he knew where it was but stopped along the way a couple of ti…

Xian is one of the few cities in China that still has a city wall and it makes for a great walk.  it is possible to walk the whole length of the wall without returning to street level and though many hire cycles to walk it only takes 3-4 hours. We leave the wall to see the Big Goose Pagoda and unexpectedly arrive in time to see the afternoon fountain display in front of the pagoda.  It is a lovely warm day and being Saturday the place is packed with locals (mainly students) enjoying…

After we dropped off my bag, we headed to a nearby, very crowded restaurant.  Tom and Chen picked out foods they thought I would like.  We ended up with sweet and sour pork, green beans and garlic, and a vegetable Tom called "purple" that looked suspiciously like eggplant. We then caught a taxi over to the wild goose pagoda for the fountain show.   It was incredibly crowded, Tom estimated there were at least 3,000 people there, in a fountain about the size of a football f…

Hohhot to Xían - the long way round
posted by:
Sep 01, 2007 - Aug 20, 2008
Arrived in Hohhot and was more than a little shell shocked at the place. I'd been expecting something a bit like Ulanbatur (a dusty developing city) and instead got something more like Vegas without the gambling! Couldn't believe how cheap it was - had dinner and beer for about a quid - awesome. Had first Mongolian hot pot - basically get a table with a gas burner in the middle and a bowl of stock on top, chuck in food as you want it, noodles/meat/veg - never had to work so hard for dinner an…

The warriors
posted by:
Jul 26, 2008 - Aug 21, 2008
This morning I got up early and took a bus to see the terracotta warriors. It was a very cheap bus, but that also meant that it took a long time to get there. We drove over a dirt road and the houses on the side of the road looked really poor. Most of them weren't even finished and people lived on and in between the rubble. The terracotta army site is a pleasant park with some buildings in between. My guidebook told me to start with pit 2 and 3 and finish with the biggest: nr…

Inga and I arrived in Xi’an around 8pm and our made our way to our hostel.  Luckily we’d been recommended the Shuyuan by Simon and BBC , who’d stayed there during Golden Week, so we knew it would be clean!  It was also a convenient location just inside the South gate of the city wall and pretty cheap too. After a great breakfast at the hostel and a little cuddle with the hostel dog’s cute pups, Inga and I made our own way to find the Terracotta Warriors.  It took two b…

When we arrived at Bob's guesthouse we found that we were in the room next door to our friends Becky and Matt.  The hostel was run by friendly staff and was quiet and relaxing.  Our first day was spent in the Muslim quarter where we tried lots of street food snacks and visited the Great Mosque and a nice market.  The next day we had planned to visit the Terracotta Warriors but as we overslept we went to the Big Goose Pagoda and Da Ci'en temple instead.  We also had …

I was 17, and excited to be embarking on my first overseas trip without my family. Culture shock, straight up. It was a really valuable trip; I learned and saw a lot. But it was HOT, and Hong Kong was depressing. I ended up taking off a week earlier than planned. I will be back one day.
