posted by:
Sep 11, 2005 - Nov 10, 2005
It was time for the worst of my illness to come back. I'd had about three days of feeling almost normal again, but it was nearly time for it to return with a little extra force than last time. We arrived in Xian on a daytime train, which was a change from the overnight ones we'd been taking. We were mobbed by Chinese students on the train; they all wanted to talk to us and exchange email addresses, but only one of them seemed to speak any English. That helped the journey pass very quickly. …

China 2007: Xian Travel Photos

From Shanghai we caught a lunch time flight to the original capital of China, Xian, home of the Terracotta Warriors. A highlight of any trip to China is the Terracotta Warrior Museum . The Terracotta Army was discovered in March 1974 by a local farmer drilling a water well to the east of Mount Lishan . In all, over 8000 life size soldiers and horses were constructed by the first Emperor Qin (Qin Shi Huangdi) in 210-209 BC. Their purpose was to help rule another empire with Shi Huangdi in the…

Today we enjoyed a big breakfast and relaxed at the hotel and then went to the airport by taxi to catch our flight to Sanya. We were once again amazed by the speed and efficiency of the check in process. We had a good flight, but it must have been the noisiest  flight I’ve ever been on. The locals were headed to their “Hawaii” at the start of the “Golden Week” holiday period. They were chatting to each one another from one end of the plane to the other, hands were constantly fi…

Despite its large size, Xi'an has a nice old town ringed by impressive walls.  I'm accompanied to the Big and Little Goose pagodas by the businessman's 12 year son.   Clouds and lightning approach as we walk around the top of the walls.  After the quick summer storm passes we take a bus to see the Terra Cotta soldiers.  On the way back to his apartment, the kid's house key falls out of this shorts pocket somewhere in large field.  It takes us almost an hour …
