This is my adventures in China in the summer of 2008. I spent 37 days in China traveling around with my brother. I am slowly, very slowly adding pictures and journals about what we did. So far this includes the Great Wall at Mutianyu, Sanjiang and Shaolin Temple. Eventually it will cover everything we did.

Xi'an is a much bigger city than I expected (as is the rest of everything in China...just all bigger than the China in my mind). Spent the first day checking out the sights: catching musical performances at the Bell Tower and Drum Tower in the center of town, and shopping/grabbing some …

Arrived in Xi'An about 1pm to a very hot 38 degrees. Luckily we could head straight to the hotel and have a shower before doing anything else. Xi'An is located on the banks of the Yellow River and has a history going back to 1000BC. It was the capital for many dynasties and the ho…

This weekend, we vistied Xi'an which is SW of Beijing. We took an overnight train there on Thursday night and arrived at 7am Friday morning! The train was actually really nice! We had "soft sleepers" which meant that we had two private rooms (there were 8 of us) with four beds in …

In transit, always seems like the best time to update my blog. Right now I’m on the top bunk of a 6 bunk hard sleeper on a 18 hour train ride from Xi’an to Chengdu in the Sichuan Province of China. About 5 hours ago I left Xi’an, where I had a good time seeing the sights and party…

Today was another optional day; but the option was to see the Terracotta soldiers of Xian, so how could I say no. Of course this means we had to wake up bright and early (before sunrise), in order to make the flight. The flights, both ways, were fine and it is interesting to note that the US is…

Although our train journey was good we were still a little bit frayed at having been awake at 6 O'clock in the morning. Us unemployed folk don't like waking up in the dark. We decided that we'd take it easy first day and chill out do a bit of catching up, laundry at the hostel, stroll around the ne…

Today we enjoyed a big breakfast and relaxed at the hotel and then went to the airport by taxi to catch our flight to Sanya. We were once again amazed by the speed and efficiency of the check in process. We had a good flight, but it must have been the noisiest flight I’ve ever been on. The …

As the "Bible" has been a little of a let down lately concerning prices and accomodation I decided to change my tactics and go with the touts waiting outside the train station. Well the first tout brought me to the recommended place in the Lonely Planet, so far for not using the "Bible"...
