Xegar (aka as new Tingri, or Shekar) at 14268 feet is a very small town and closest town to the checkpoint to the Mt Everest region. So its importance is its role as the gateway to Mt Everest base camp, or more generally the Chomalungma Nature Reserve which includes Mt Everest. Historically this has also been the jump off point for the climbing expeditions. The town does have electricity, which is not always true of towns in Tibet.
