Devils Tower National Monument
posted by:
Jul 24, 2006 - Aug 26, 2006
We packed up our camp and headed to the Tower.  Devils Tower is volcanic in nature, the theory is that hundreds of thousands of years ago, magma welled up inside a soft mountain, and over the eons the mountain eroded away, leaving the hardened tower we see today.   We stopped at the visitor center first, then we walked the trail around the mountain, and up it as high as we could get without technical climbing permits. Tyler clambered up the rocks like a billy goat!  We wat…

Day 4 - Evanston, Wyoming - Full entry with lots of pics
posted by:
Jul 08, 2007 - Sep 17, 2007
I'm sitting in a motel room in Evanston, Wyoming. The buffalo heads that greet motel patrons are a bit on the creepy side, but I'm happy to be here. It's 11:15 P.M. Mountain time. I'm utterly exhausted. It's been a loooong day on the road. I'm ready to take a hot shower and climb under the sheets. We had some misadventures today... for example, leaving the keys in the ignition and accidentally locking the door in a desolate town in Wyoming. That was an experience... But the town really…

Got up today and headed out to have a look around Cody. We had decided that we wanted to take the Cody Trolley Tour. I’m sure there are some out there who think that’s oh so "touristy" but for me if I think a town/city has a cool history or I’d like to learn more about it I will always seek out a tour of the place to get some background info, plus suggestions of things to see and do.      We got down to the trolley ticket place which is r…

My trips to Wyoming are amazing. My mother lives there so I know all the hot spots. I actually plan on going back at the end of this month. The best time to go is at the end of this month when they have Cheyenne Fontier Days. Its a huge rodeo with lots of drinking and good times. It's very beautiful and peace ful. Your able to sit and actually think about things and your life. The sunsets are astonishing. You could spend your whole life just sitting and watching the sunsets.. Everything about…

Devils Tower National Park, Wyoming
posted by:
Apr 19, 2008 - Apr 27, 2008
Got up at 6:00am and headed north to Livingston, Montana. Stopped by McDonalds for a quick breakfast and got on I-90 East. Our first stop on our trip is Devils Tower, Wyoming. It was 31 miles from I-90. A beautiful drive and lots of animals to see. For instance, horses, cows, antelope, and deer. We started off in Montana and went through Wyoming and into South Dakota. Devils Tower is awesome. When you first drive into the park you pass a large group of prairie dogs running and barking. Cute …

I went 50 miles out of my way for this...

Even though I couldn't make it to Devil's Tower before sunset, I wasn't worried. I had my tripod in the car and the waning sun could still provide enough light if I just held my camera shutter open manually. It wasn't until after I drove the extra 30 miles to the tower, accepted the fact that NO ONE would be around to help if something happened and fumbled with my tripod in the dark for a good twenty minutes, that I realized I had NO IDEA how to do that with my camera! The end result was a ha…

United States -› Montana, USA -› ...
I have vivid memories of Devils Tower from my early childhood! I remember clearly running through the tower trail through the boulders to find my mother, I remember sitting at the cafe near the entrance if the park with my family reading a Native American legend about how the tower came into existence, and I remember the excitement in my heart when I first looked up at the tower.. The tower has fascinated me ever since and I was ecstatic to finally had the chance to revisit the Tower when I w…

We had to meet at 7:15 am for an 8 hour raft trip down the Snake River just south of Jackson WY.  There were 12 of us and a guide (Chris Walker) on the raft and it was a beautiful (and warm) morning.  The first four hours were gentle scenery and a chance for all of us to learn to paddle together in some sort of order. (My husband & I didn’t acknowledge any prior paddling experience - the best paddlers always get put in the front of the raft and we just didn’t feel like …

How can a Fort not have a big tall wooden fence?

Now on to a National Park Service Site, Fort Laramie is a few more miles down the road.  All three of these sites are right along the Platte River.  This one looks like a lot more from a distance.  You can see some ruins of prior buildings and then a couple that are still standing, with roofs.    At the entry a Ranger will take you entry fee and give you a brochure with site map and historic facts.  This is a pretty large “fort”, with lots of empty space …

Highway 296 to Cody
posted by:
Sep 11, 2002 - Sep 22, 2002
Disappointment has no place on this trip.  Although we woke up to cold temperatures and steady rainfall, we had no choice.  We were riding over the mountain to Cody and we were going to do it with a smile on our face.  Of course, we could have just sat around the hotel all day, eating and shopping, but that's not the way we travel.  How will we ever get anywhere if we let a little cold rain stop us from riding?  There are no pictures today.  We were too busy tryi…

Devils Tower, Bighorn Stew, and 11 over the speed limit...

Same results?  Definitely.  After the two man made monuments, we traveled across the state line into Wyoming.  Another state, check it!  I had heard from numerous people how amazing Devil's Tower was...so we ventured off the beaten highway and headed into the northeast corner of Wyoming.  Same results as before.  Except this time, the view wasn't quite as amazing.  I think the admission was something around $12, which would've been $3 a person.  Not exp…
