world war one memorial for americans and its allies Oct 26, 2009
It all started in april 2005,my sister nephew and i decided to take a trip to france, prior to leaving the small town of berlin wisconsin, my mother and i picked up some flowers from a local market, we placed 2 by her fathers grave. the remaining flowers where taken on the trip. our trip lasted 5 days which consisted of travels in paris, normandy coast and CHATEAU THIERRY,after 2 days 1 in paris and 1 on the normandy coast, it was time to pay respect to my grandfather max piotrowski.he was wounded at the battle of chateau thierry in 1918 where he earned his purple heart. so we headed out of paris on a train trip to chateau thierry. the trip consisted of 2 trains. it was sunday morning. it took several hours to get there. we arrived on a gloomy somewhat cold and rainy afternoon. arriving at the train station.this town does not have many travelers thier were no taxi's or buses on sunday.we walked throught the little town had a few snacks and took several pictures. the memorial and cemetary for americans was 8 kilometers out of the town,so we walked back to the train station and i found a taxi notice on a bulletin board and called a local taxi driver who was off for sunday that was willing to take us on our small journey out of town.he picked us up with smiles and said that they dont have many requests for people to go to this location. he stayed with us the whole time allowing us plenty of time to pay our respects, and take plenty of pictures. my grandfather was part of the 32nd division 128th infantry. which we found on the memorial.during our visit we placed the other flowers from his hometown,by the memorial and toasted wine in glasses and a tin cup from my grandfathers home.after our visit the taxi driver took us back to the train station, and only charged us the equivelant of 40 us dollars. so we doubled that with a tip. this trip was important to us to actually see where my grandfather was wounded. sometimes the little known places off the beaten path become great memories.
