Volunteering and living with the locals. Jul 23, 2011
I spent three weeks in southern Italy, lived with a family and felt like I 'made a difference'. It was an exchange of my time and talents for living arrangements.

Found my Italian family through, but there are other sites out there ( I think) which started the email conversation, arranging dates, type of work, other logistics with my hosts.

I helped them in their olive and fruit orchard when the weather was nice. But when we had a little rain we worked on restoring their centuries-old villa, laying stone, etc.

Staying with a family is a great way to get into the culture of an area, get immersion language practice and save on lodging (but be willing to give 5-6 hours work a day).
