Women & traveling in India Travel Reviews

Good things to remember for women traveling in India, especially in rural sections such as Rajasthan:
(these don't apply to big urban areas)

1) Be culturally sensitive when possible. This means covering up bare shoulders, avoiding tank tops, mini skirts or tiny shorts.

2) Clothes that reveal a lot of skin are often considered offensive and immodest -- and may attract unwanted attention from men.

3) If you can buy, buy traditional clothing. You'll be treated better by locals, and people will appreciate you trying to take part in Indian culture.

4) At religious sites such as Jain or Hindu temples, remember to take your shoes off before entering the building. There is often a person who's job is to watch the shoes of visitors. Be respectful of this.

5) Eye contact with young men may be taken as a flirtatious gesture or a come on. Don't prolong eye contact unless you're looking for a date that night!

6) Don't be surprised when women and families express interest in your skin color, clothing and where you are from. I was approached many times by Indians who stroked my skin and were interested in how pale I was, my choice of clothing and how life in America is.

7) Children may expect gifts, especially in smaller villages. Don't be stingy. They often are grateful for pencils, empty water bottles or small change. Don't encourage begging, but don't be a scrooge, either!

I followed these rules, and was often thanked for being respectful of cultural codes. Many traditional Indians are disgusted or horrified by how many Western women dress while visiting their country. I was repeatedly thanked for being "modest" in my dress and for being respectful of religious property by observing proper etiquette.

I agree with you, I tried to dress in traditional dress when I could and I felt it was appriciated too.
Great country to visit, but I wouldn't travel on my own in India. I was also stroked to see what white skin felt like, and my blonde hair was of great interest.
