Wolfe's Lair Reviews
Fantastic place to visit Jul 09, 2015
The site served as Hitlers war headquarters (Wolfschannze) during WW2. (He spent a total of 900 days here) Several bunkers and building are on site to be viewed, although the Nazis tried to destroy it before they retreated.
We took the train from Gdansk to Ketrzyn. What a lovely little station! A Local bus took us right to the site near Gierloz. We had booked a room at Wilczy Szaniec for 1 night. The room is basic, but good enough for an unforgettable stay in the Wolfe's Lair. Beware, the restaurant closes at 18:00.
Entry to the site is free if you stay on site. This will also allow you to wonder around after the tourist busses have left. During the day it can be very busy, with busses bringing large tour groups.
The negatives: # Beware of school groups.... they are there to run around and have fun, and could be rather irritating.
# Unless you hire a guide the site is a "do it yourself". The shop selling the guidebook closed early and opened late when we were there (out of season) # Although all the signs request visitors to refrain from entering the ruins, all indications are that people ignore this.
Even with the few negatives it's still an amazing place to visit. Glad we made the effort to get there (public transport not so easy as this is "an off the tourist track" venue)
