Here's a place in the Volta region you simple can't miss. Wli falls is the highest waterfall in Western Africa, and the second highest in all of Africa, at 1000 feet. The falls itself is a 45 minute easy hike of gorgeous scenery into the forest. It's one of those experiences where you turn around a corner and hear the rushing noise of the waterfall and there it is in all its glory.
Just watching the falls is great enough, but why watch them, when you can swim in them! Don't forget your bathing suit on this day trip and jump in the water! See how close you can get to the thundering water, and if you're daring enough, walk right under the falls to the rock wall behind it. Look up and you'll see a dark shadow over the rocks overhead. But it's not a shadow, it's bats! Disturb them too much and a dark cloud with swarm over the falls and throw a shadow over the small pool, but don't worry, they don't get very close. This is an opportunity not to be wasted. Bring a picnic and spend an afternoon in the cool water on a hot day! Part of the London and Ghana 2006 travel blog |
