The quaint town of Wittenberg (officially known as Lutherstadt Wittenberg) in the eastern German state of Saxony-Anhalt. Easy to get to from Leipzig and Berlin, Wittenberg has a charming Altstadt (Old Town) with picturesque buildings. Though beautiful, it's most famous for one of its former residents- Martin Luther and is thought of to be the site of the Reformation's beginning.
Amongst other things, there is a Lutherhaus Museum which is housed where he once lived. In this museum is a copy of his famous translation of the New Testament into German. There are also museums to Luther contemporaries Lucas Cranach d.A. and Philipp Melanchthon.
