Milwaukee

The late 19th century saw the incorporation of Milwaukee's first suburbs. The aforementioned Bay View existed as an independent village from 1879-1886. In March 1889, that community saw four days of protest and one day of rioting against its Chinese laundrymen. Sparking this city-wide disturbance were allegations of sexual misconduct between two Chinese and a number of underaged white females. The unease and tension in the wake of the riot was assuaged by the direct disciplining of the city's...

Autumn in the Northwoods of Wisconsin
posted by:
Oct 11, 2006
I awake to the sun peering through the yellow and orange hued maples and oaks.  The tinkling of wind chimes is heard outside, the open window lets in the nostalgic breeze of autumn leaves.   I am anxious to get outside, to suck in the cool morning air, to wrap my senses around everything golden hued or red tinged.  What a stark contrast to the life I lead in the southwest.  In the desert, there is a stillness there that is never disturbed, save for one of those rare mons...

Leaving on a Jet Plane! Japan here I come!
posted by:

I am back in the USA and I am not too sure how I feel about that. I miss Japan a lot because the last two and half years have been awesome. As the plane started to go down the runway I kept thinking “What am I doing?” and “Could they turn the plane around?” I don’t remember too much of the flight because I slept through most of it. I do remember that all of the movie titles did not match the movies that were showing because the airline was in the process of changing from the March m...

We hadn't planned to leave until the 28th... the next day, however we just couldn't wait. It wasn't like we were going that far, but we were going somewhere. Our first stop we Masalowski Beach in Ashland WI. It provided us with space to stretch our legs and view the Ashland lighthouse. After our break, and reading the map we continued on. More on Ashland later, as we explore it more on our return trip.

My first camping trip
posted by:

Clearly I don't remember much of this trip, as I was only 2 or 3 years old at the time.  Our family took a camping trip to Eau Galle Recreation Area in the next town over.  The park has a beach, campsites, hiking trails and a playground.  It is still a popular summer spot in the area.  A large earthen dam creates the reservoir and protects the town from floods.  The reservoir is good for swimming and fishing and boating.   The have newer horse trails if...

It was never about the football for us.  It was never about the unprecedented 3 MVP's or the Super Bowl title.  It didn't matter that he held all  major passing records. You see, Brett Favre gave the game of football to us.  He came in wide-eyed with a cannon for an arm--an old school "gunslinger".  His first completed pass came against Tampa Bay.  Do you know who caught that pass?  He did.  That was when we knew there was some hope to b...

Manitowish Waters will forever be the most magical place on the planet for me.It's from this delightful little Northwoods location that the miracles started that enabled this trip to even be possible....And I owe it all to two of the Earth's most finest people: Ed and Patricia.I feel priveldged to have been able to visit this place twice and look forward to my next visit.I had a wonderful time soaking up the beauty and peace of this quiet little northwoods town. What to Pack!
posted by:

We are now back home after a 22-hour drive in a Saturn sedan with two huge chocolate Labrador Retrievers in our backseat. The cold temperatures hit us shortly after we got into Georgia and then the snow greeted us in Indiana. Nothing like a cold welcome home to numb our senses. Alright, so I can't complain. I love sweater weather but still wish it could stay just mild enough for sweaters and not dip down into the negative windchills like it will do this week in Milwaukee. Needless to say, we...

So continuing on with my Milwaukee tourist activities, I went to the Urban Ecology Center for a self-guided tour.  I may actually try to make it back next week to do a tour with the executive director (he has one every Wednesday at 9am).  I have been on a tour of the ecology center before, but I just love this place so I wanted to share it with the travbuddies out there.  The Urban Ecology center, like everything great in Milwaukee, is on the east side of town.  I took t...

Does it always snow in Wisconsin?
posted by:
Jan 18, 2008 - Feb 04, 2008
So the sunday before was the big Green Bay game (well, the next to the last big Green Bay game).  I remember walking through the grocery store and saw a beautiful photo on the front of Sports Illustrated.  It was of Brett Favre with a football tightly in his hand and huge snow flakes falling infront of him.  It made me wonder... does it always snow in Wisconsin?  Because as I drive it wasn't snowing, per say.  But it was whisping around the road like white tumble weed...

I have spent 41 summers in Door County, Wisconsin. What a great place to vacation close to Chicago. It reminds me of a small New England fishing village. Many great memories of friends and family along the way. Best time to go is fall but the summers are really nice also. Boulder Junction is in North Central Wisconsin and is just as beautiful. More rustic and outdoor specific. Either way you can't go wrong.
