Winston-Salem, locally nicknamed Twin City, is in the Piedmont region of North Carolina. Similar to the triangle area of Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill, Winston-Salem is part of the 'Triad' along with Greensboro and High Point (known for the furniture market). You might think you've never heard of it, but you've heard of Winston cigarettes and Salem cigarettes, right? Well, this is where they come from along with Camel and other brands. Winston-Salem is also the home of Hanes the underwear company, Wachovia Bank, Krispy Kreme doughnuts and Texas Pete (not from Texas).

One unique part of Winston-Salem is its Moravian heritage. This can be witnessed in the Old Salem district, which is somewhat like Colonial Williamsburg. Moravian traditions can be seen the most during Christmas with Moravian stars, sugar cakes, cookies and the Candle Tea event.

Winston-Salem is the home to Wake Forest University, a prominent private liberal arts college with respected medical and law programs. Their athletic teams compete in the Atlantic Coast Conference. Winston-Salem State University, Salem College and the North Carolina School of the Arts are also located here.

RJ Reynolds Tobacco has played a large part in the development of the city. Lovely Reynolda Gardens located adjacent to Wake Forest is part of the company's legacy.

Hable con ella

Oh my God I miss Spain.  So today I rented this video from the library called "Hable con ella" or Talk to her.  It's critically acclaimed and I really didn't think too much of it.  But I would highly recommend it.  That and despite some of its thought provoking scenes, it left me nostalgic for Spain.  There were scenes from Madrid and the tiny apartments.  There were also scenes from the vast expanse of what seemed like the middle of no where.  The green val...

Jeff tried to join us in Greensboro for our reunion at Jake's, but he had some family emergency come up on Friday morning.  Therefore, we decided to drive over to Winston-Salem to spend a little time with him on Saturday.  Everyone who ends up spending the weekend at the hospital needs some flowers and a little love and support from good friends.  I'm really glad we went, but it was a rough visit.  It was really hard to be there in the middle of his family s...
