One of The Best Wine Museums in the World. Nov 09, 2010
"One of The Best Wine Museums in the World". This Wine Museum is placed in the worldwide famous wine region of La Rioja, in Spain, in the village of Briones, 32 kilometers far from Logroño, the capital of the region and Autonomy Community of La Rioja.

This museum belongs to the Dinastia Vivanco Foundation. It,s divided in five halls and floors of exposition on 9,000 m2 from cultural collection of Vivanco Rioja winemaking family. Archaeology, sculpture, painting, ceramic, etc. give us a universal view from the importance that wine has had in all cultures throughout history. A specialized library, a tasting room, two restaurants, a conference room and a Wine Shop complement the services of this great Museum of Wine Culture.

Also you can visit to the winery or cellar, and book for a 2 hours fast course of "Wine-tasting" on saturdays.

Also you can make a virtual visit:

The five floors of the museum offer a walk through history and culture of wine production. Wine world and its history view from its links with mythology and religion, society life and arts, traditional work tasted from the field and from the cellar...

Some of things I learned thanks to Guided Visit, and great explanations from the guide:

Firstly, if you reach Briones by car, you will be able to watch and stop alongside large extensions of wineyards, which full the Riojan landscape following the river Ebro. You will pass some villages like Cenicero, Fuenmayor, Torremontalvo, crowded by famous Wine Cellars and beautiful views. Specially if you travel in automn - after the harvest season: about september- you will see magnificient colours in the scenery.

You will be able to taste wine in some of the Wineries around; also buying different kind of wine: - "del año o joven" "new" - "cosechero" from local cellars, "crianza" or "reserva" or "great reserva".

"Rioja" is one of the most famous wine region label around the world. The Wine region is formed by The Rioja region, part of Alava -province of Pais Vasco- close to Rioja and some municipies from the linking region of Navarra.

We are talking about a region, La Rioja, wich wines were greatly valued in the Roman era, not about one of new wine lands growing all around the world in last century.

La Rioja was under the path that in last centuries were open by French harvesters and oraganization in "wine world".

La Rioja was the first of the Origin Qualified Denominations in Spain. There are a lot of Origin Denominations, but "Qualified" means a superior control of cuality and origin made by the "Consejor Regulador de la Denominación de Origen Cualificada Rioja" -"Council of the Denomination of Origin Qualified Rioja".

This organism ensure, veil for the quality and origin from this wine.

In such way, this organism, alows only some specific varieties of grape for being accepted as Rioja: "temparnillo", "graciano" "garnacha" and "mazuelo" for red wine. There is some culture from "white wine" and "cava" -spanish denomination for "champaigne".

At same time, only a given amount of grape tones is alowed to be harvested by the wineries and wine cellars, under strict "rights" of culture -"cupos" or "derechos- rights" wich cannot be increased, only trasferred by selling -like NBA franchise, for making an example-

What this means? That the quality, prestige, value and organizative estructure of Rioja Wine is in vanguard and forefront.

Great review! I saw Logroño on the signs when we drove to Holland this summer. From Zaragoza to Pamplona and then up to San Sebastián. Next time we must stop here! :)
