Amazing views & a great hike May 11, 2011
If you come to South Australia, you must try to visit the Flinders Ranges. The unique landscape is breathtaking and there are so many different towns along the way, each with their own unique history. Wilpena Pound is 17 kilometre long natural amphitheatre located within the Flinders Ranges National Park. At only $8.50 to enter the park (per car) it really is something that you cannot afford to miss. There are a number of different hikes available and you are free to choose whichever you like depending on your time constraints, level of fitness or the sight you would like to see. If you only have the day though (and are fairly fit) I strongly recommend the hike to St Mary Peak. The direct route is just under 15km (return) and will take you up 1170m, to the second highest peak in South Australia. The walk is difficult in some areas, particularly nearing the top, but is well worth the views that you will get! For the best walk, start early in the morning to avoid the midday sun and pack a lunch so you can eat and relax 'on top of the world!'
