You Must Visit This Foodie Dive Sep 30, 2016
I grew up in the rural South, a place where we gathered at my Grandmama's house every Sunday to eat her famous fried chicken. Is Willie Mae's chicken as good as Grandmama's? Nah, it's not. But it sure is close! This place is legit and needs to be added to every foodie's must-eat list.

I arrived early (at 10 am) and while there were only a couple of folks already seated in the inside dining room, the takeout area already had a pretty large crowd. I watched as a steady stream of local construction workers would roll in and get their usual and then roll back out. We were seated at a small table in the dining room, which has an authentic Southern flair. It really did make me feel like I was back home. The hospitality felt very family oriented too; as a tourist I didn't feel that I was an annoyance to anyone (we were the only tourists in there by the way). Now did we get some stares from folks? Yeah, but that was most likely because of our "Yankee" accents. It was obvious that "ya'll ain't from 'round here."

We both opted for the fried chicken plate (white meat costs extra). The chicken was moist on the inside and crispy on the outside. It was a wonderfully juicy, delicious and traditional plate of fried chicken. The rice and gravy was killer good but wasn't what I was used to as a kid (it was spicy brown gravy instead of white gravy, which confused me at first but it tasted great)! Of course I had to order the green beans since that's one of my favorite foods ever, and they were tasty as expected.

The restaurant is very unassumming and it's just a little house in the middle of a regular neighborhood. Parking is on the street. If you're up for it, come early when they open at 10 am to avoid the wait. Remember that it's never too early for some lip smackin' good fried chicken.

It's all about the Fried chicken May 16, 2015
Willie Mae's Scotch House has been the darling of every show on the Travel and Food Channels because of their fried chicken which has many times been called "America's Best". That's quite a lofty claim. Moreover, after the original restaurant was closed due to damage from Hurricane Katrina, it's re-opening had almost become a national cause. So I vowed when I go to New Orleans to sample this amazing fried chicken, as it is secretly my favorite food. It is very unassuming and looks like some local neighborhood place in a not-so-picturesque part of the city. Once you go in though, the place is full of many people who do not look or sound like locals. Word has gotten out. The service is brisk, not full of warm southern hospitality, but that's not the point of being here. They have a menu full of soul food, but I came for the chicken. The prices were quite cheap by NY standards. I ordered 3 pieces with macaroni and cheese. Despite the name, scotch nor any other alcoholic beverage is sold there. (I needed a break from drinking anyway!) The meal came out quickly. It was VERY hot and probably should have sat a bit. The batter was absolutely delicious with a wonderful kick. The meat was very juicy. HOWEVER, it was very greasy. Too much so for my poor stomach. I've had good fried chicken that is not greasy so something is not being done. Not sure what. So while the taste was first rate and the macaroni and cheese was yummy, the greasiness of the chicken stops me from declaring it "America's Best." That distinction still goes to Mitchie's Tavern in Monticello, Virginia.
