Juneau, the Dodge County seat, is conveniently located between Madison and Milwaukee on Highway 26. The City of Juneau is called a city with a heart and the "Gateway to the Wild Goose Trail.” The Wild Goose State Trail runs directly through the city, offering hiking and bicycling. The 34-mile nature trail starts just 6 miles south of Juneau on Highway 60 at Clyman Junction. It is a compacted limestone trail on an abandoned rail bed as it runs through the rural countrysides of Dodge and Fond du Lac Counties and skirts the western edge of the internationally known Horicon Marsh National Wildlife Refuge. A separate horseback-riding trail runs alongside the trail for 7.5 miles from Hwy 60 north to Minnesota Junction. In the winter, snowmobiles and ATV riders can enjoy the scenic route. A person can rest at any of the area restaurants and taverns along the way to warm up and eat, then fuel up along the way at the local gas stations. We enjoy this scenic trail all year long. The Marshview ATV riders club holds their annual poker run riding the trail, so watch for it!

The Horicon Marsh is known as the "Little Everglades of the North,”. World famous for its annual geese migrations, the marsh also provides annual habitat for over 219 species of birds and waterfowl, including magnificent trumpeter swans returning from near extinction. Other species found in abundance include egrets, herons, and sand hill cranes, several species of migrating ducks, tundra swans, and Canada Geese by the thousands. We get sand hill cranes nesting in our front yard. An extinct glacial lake, the Horicon Marsh is the largest freshwater cattail marsh in the United States. The nearby Rock River offers excellent fishing and boating. Surrounding communities are beaver dam, Fox Lake, Mayville, Horicon, Watertown, and Waupun.

The annual Juneau August Fest is held the last full weekend of August. Dodge county is known for their area parks, such as Ledge park in Horicon and Derge park on Beaver Dam lake. They offer great camping sites and hiking trails. We went there for cub scouting events and had an pleasant time exploring the outdoors.
