This small town, in the south of Poland, just 10 km away from Krakow, is most famous for its Kopalnia Soli (Salt Mine) - the only construction of its kind which was one of the world's oldest operating salt mines. This UNESCO World Cultural Heritage listed mine had been in continuous operation until 2007, producing table salt, since the 13th century. The whole mine is an underground world of salt halls, chambers and chapels, some even 327m below the ground. The magnificent Kaplica Bl. Kingi (Chapel of the Blessed Kinga) - made entirely of salt is 10 m tall, 54 long and 15 m wide. It is beautifully decorated, with unique chandeliers made from salt crystals and other salt sculptures.

I apologize to any Irish men I have offended on my last entry, I did not mean to do that (only to one English man, Wayne). They have left the hostel and have probably left Poland already to go back to their island. I have been having some weird uneducational lessons lately from the english man. I have discovered that I fancy Jiminy Bean whiskey or something and also a few tips on dlsr that I do not really remember or understand.  I really like Krakow. So cosy and just the right place to ...

Wieliczka Salt Mine
posted by:

I think enough blogs have explained what the Salt Mine in Wieliczka is, so I'll just briefly mention that it's a salt mine that started in the 13th century & only recently stoped officially mining.  It was placed on UNESCO's World Heritage list in 1978, then on their "World Heritage in Danger" list from 1989-1998.  The tour is a bit pricey, 61 zl. for the foriegn language tour, or 45 for the Polish language one.  Tack on 10 if you want to take pictures.&...

Wieliczka Salt Mines

I didn't know anything about the fabled, UNESCO listed Wieliczka Salt Mines before arriving in Krakow, but once I arrived at the hostel tons of people were talking about it so I decided to take a day trip there with Tyler and B. Tyler and B. had traveled all over Asia before making their way to Krakow and were quite jaded about UNESCO sites. They said that many of the UNESCO heritage sites that they had been to had been pretty lackluster, and they speculated that it was some giant money makin...

Salt Mine - Day 8
posted by:

We took an old Communist-era city bus to the Wieliczka Salt Mine.  One of 10 UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Poland.  We weren’t quite sure what stop we were supposed to get off, but we decided to follow a group of  Japanese tourists when they got off the bus.  Fortunately, this was a good decision as it was the right stop.  We walked to the salt mine from the bus stop and took the tour.  It was very impressive to see the sculptures, monuments, cathedrals...
