Wiehl Limestone Cave
Wiehl Limestone Cave Reviews
Wiehl Limestone Cave Oct 26, 2012
The limestone cave of wiehl is one of the very few showcaves in germany which photography is allowed. It can only be accessed through tours, to avoid people that would vandalized the cave system and stop the growth of the natural formations inside. The cave is lit with electricity and be careful of the electric cables that snakes its way around the labyrinth of the limestone cave.
the wiehl limestone cave is located in the hills (or small mountains) of the heavily forested part of the bergisches land east of cologne. The guide told us that the fossils found in the cave are more than 300 million years of age and bats reside in the cave (but as i visited this autumn - they are already in hibernation). There are also - believe it or not - ferns and mosses growing in the ageing rocks inside the cave. The mean temperature inside is around 8°c.
im a little dissapointed though because i went there for photography but i couldnt go alone inside the cave so i had very few pics since the tour doenst wait too long for people with professional cameras but the positive side is that the cave tour is only 3,50 euros - oh and the tour is only in german.
