Whyte Avenue is on the south side of Edmonton, day and night its filled with people, mostly locals. You can find absolutely everything stretched out on the long avenue, from small music venues to Mexican restaurants with outside patios. For clothing stores there are a couple of independent ones who charge a little extra but you can be sure that you're the only one who will have whatever it is you're buying. Overall- they're expensive. For cafes and restaurants there are a number of great places such as Fuss Cupcakes, with most of its ingredients imported from Europe, those are the best cupcakes in town. Same with gelato places, they're made natural just like the ones in Italy. Julios Bario is one of my favourite places to go on a hot day and have a couple of Bulldogs (tequila mixed with lime juice and corona beer),and not to mention Death by Chocolate, as well as the store dedicated completely to mountains and mountains of candy. For night life there are lots of small venues all over Whyte, and couple of pool halls, The Billiard Club, and The Rack.
