Whitfield Hall Feb 17, 2017
If you climb up to the Blue Mountain Peak, you'll most probably start from one of the three guesthouses in the east of Penlyne Castle. We quickly ruled out the Wildflower Lodge due to a far lower rating than the other two. Reading further, we saw several reviews saying that some people were charged more with their bills at Jah B's - which left us with Whitfield Hall.

Whitfield Hall has a history as a coffee farm dating back to 1776. Many things are still like in the old times, including the wonderful old wooden house. It has a big common room with a piano and shelves of old books. To the left and right of it are the rooms, most are dorms, but there is also one one private room. There is a ktichen you can use for free, however if you are not staying in the house (they offer also camping on site for 10 US$ per person), you may have to pay a small fee to use the kitchen. Drinks (water, cola, beer) are avialable, the Wildflower Lodge further down the road has a gift shop and a mini market which mostly has drinks but also some snacks like buns, cakes, fried plaintains and mackarels. The old style of Whitfiel Hall means that there is no electricity (and therefore no wifi) as well as no hot running water (only cold). Light in the night is provided by kerosen lamps and the kitchen runs with gas bottles. It adds to the atmosphere and we were completely fine with it, but people used too much to modern life may find it difficult.

The place is run by Everton who is an excellent and very helpful host. He is also your cook and will prepare meals on request (8US$ for heavy breakfast and 9US$ for dinner). This request however has to made in advance as there are no nearby grocery stores and food has to be brought up. Guides up to the blue mountain peak can be hired for 40US$ (group of up to five people, every additional person 5 US$). All prices as of early 2017.
