White Horse Tavern Newport Reviews
Oldest tavern in the country Jul 23, 2011
The last night in Newport my friend and I went to the White Horse Tavern, supposedly the oldest tavern in America. When you're inside you believe it. The place reeks history: low wooden beamed ceilings, creaky floors, odd angles, small rooms, and some earthy smell that only an old building can have. The rooms are also lit by candlelight. Felt like you were in Williamsburg, Va. The place is a little off the beaten path from the tourist zone, but still walkable. The patio outside is nothing special so sit inside. The food was very good New England cuisine. The Clam Chowder was very tasty, however it was more like soup than a chowder which was a little disappointing despite the rich flavor. The Scallops were sweet and a littler briny, which was awesome! (Black Pearl's were a little better) There was a nice wine selection and the bar looked like a classy colonial pub. It's nice to be able to say I've eaten in the oldest tavern in America.
