Good Value but keep your expectations reasonable Feb 18, 2011
Its hard to be too critical considering it is Puerto Galera and after spending the last week in flawless weather and as far from 21st century urban sprawl as you can get within a 2-hour flight.

In fact, I almost hate to use this particular rating scale for two key reasons:

1) The front desk, aka the accommodation shack, generally does not have more than two cats on duty at once. Normally you will find the hostess sleeping underneath the desk but mostly you will need to go inside the annexed house and ask for Laura who will likely offer you a few slices of delicious Jackfruit before you go up to your room.

2) For the price you pay (1000 pesos/night), the accommodations are pretty much on par with the other lodging options for that price.

But before you take my word for it, ask yourself, "How badly do I need hot water anyway?" Or any water at all?

I am not by nature a hardcore rough-it guy. But I also a guy who does not mind leaving his comfort zone on vacation. So, while I will be painfully honest in my assessment, I will tell you why the guest house is really not a bad bet if you are planning a stay in White Beach.

Physically, the property sits just 30 meters from the main road that leads Tricycle and Jeepney drivers into Puerto Galera proper and Aninuan Falls. It is closer to the road than the beach itself but this is much better since you don't get the noise and relentless ladyboy hawkers that patrol every foot of White Beach.

Furthermore, an uninterrupted view of the Aninuan mountainside where a cold water spring offers a chilling, misty visual even during the some of island's warmest days.

You may not have much time to appreciate the view. This is a friendly place, where rooms maybe small but the living spaces in the corridors are most certainly not. Meeting fellow travelers was never easier when each floor comes with two couches, two mini-fridges and a barbecue. Stock those iceboxes full of San Miguel, hit up the markets for some chicken, fresh produce and a bottle of vinegar , and you are cooking your very own Chicken Adobo. Of course, you will also need charcoal and a lot of patience, but worth the struggle!

Getting to bed is probably the hardest part to do. The nightlife on the island is unique with Flamethrowers, Mindoro Sling cocktails and a lot of willing company for single male tourists could mean you're going to ready for a good day's sleep. That said, exhaustion may actually be the only remedy to conquer stiff mattresses and couch pillows that will leave you wondering why you didn't just sleep on the beach. Often the mornings offer little reward for a night of labored slumber as dry season means you will likely be shaving, showering and brushing your teeth with a bottle of spring water - underrated experience and an excuse to go visit the falls where you will take a real shower.

White Beach Guest House accepts only cash, so even if you book through a web site be sure to bring enough bills for your stay ahead of time. Its quite hard to budget in Mindoro because services are very competitive and territorial you may pay three times as much for something on the beach than you do in town. It may not be a bad idea to even pay for your rooms in advance, and they don't ask for a deposit.

If its not camping its definitely a hostel and in my travels I have paid the same amount in one currency or another for both forms of lodging. I would advise WBGH for travelers who are not too concerned with comfort or complacency but don't mind a clean room and some modest creature comforts. I would also recommend it for those who might otherwise choose to stay in a more upscale place as it breeds a sense of adventure that can take you to some really amazing spots in Mindoro.
