Where to get medications in the Philippines Reviews
Where to purchase medicines (OTC and prescription) in the Philippines Nov 20, 2012
As a traveler, we inadvertently need to purchase medicines as a result of forgetting to bring them along, when minor accidents happen, or to refill a prescription. Or in some cases, to do the aforementioned and to buy groceries.
Most countries have drugstores / pharmacies / apothecaries / chemists / dispensaries, etc. which usually specialize in selling medications and medical supplies, filling out prescriptions, and nothing much more. In the Philippines, one drugstore chain stands out for selling reasonably priced medicines, plus a host of groceries and other items.
Mercury Drug store with its familiar winged messenger logo has been around since 1945, and has grown to over 150 branches in major cities and towns in the Philippines. Their more prominent branches are located in Ayala Center (opened in 1963) and Quiapo (since 1965) which has a large LCD screen.
What sets Mercury apart from most drugstores is the convenience it offers. Many of their stores are open 24 hours daily, and I usually time my visits to the store nearest my house at odd hours (when there are fewer customers). The lines can get long, so plan your visits for purchase of regular prescriptions and medical supplies.
And, a number of larger Mercury Drug store branches double as grocery stores where you can buy packaged food items, including bread, softdrinks and ice cream. Not to mention a lot of toiletries.
One trivia some of you might have noticed: Mercury Drugstore does not have any branches in SM Malls - that is the territory of Watson's, who has a franchise partnership with SM.
