Here's a short description of the popular tourist locations in Malta
Bugibba: Very quiet in winter, lots of British tourists, reasonably good selection of bars and restaurants, artificial sandy beach.
Mellieha: Very quiet in winter, easy access to the Gozo ferry but not to other parts of Malta unless you rent a car, home to one of Malta's longest sandy beaches. Limited nightlife.
Sliema: Busy all year round, good transport links to Valletta and the north of Malta, lots of shops, hotels, bars and restaurants, quite expensive and congested.
St. Julians: Busy all year round, best place for nightlife and therefore quite noisy, several 5-star hotels, good transport links to Valletta and the north of Malta, ideal for youngsters.
Valletta: very quiet after 7pm, best place for public transport, plenty of historical buildings to admire, limited accommodation options.
