When should you book a flight? New York Reviews
Coast to coast flight in USA Oct 14, 2010
I've recently taken a flight from LA to NY, and I did several mistakes I'd like to help other people avoid by learning from my mistakes...
So as I mentioned, I needed to get from LA to NY and I figured, why not book a flight ahead on Expedia.com to a noon-ish time so I can leave LA at a normal hour and not wake up too early and get to NY in a decent time to wonder at night until I find the hostel I was staying for the night. So I took a flight that leaves LA at 11:30 AM and arrives to NY (JFK) at 8PM (NY time-zone, three hours ahead of the west coast time). It sounded just fine, but when I realized how wrong I was - it was just too late to change anything.
So first of all - yes, it is important to book ahead, flight are cheaper if you book in advance, but don't make I made and DON'T take a NON-REFUNDEBLE deal! It might be cheaper, but change in plans may occur and you don't want to buy a second ticket because of it.
Second, if you're flying with luggage like I did, better check the airlines rules about luggage, because I took Delta because it was cheap and a reliable option, but I needed to add 60$ to pay for my 2 bags, and that didn't make it cheap anymore. Some airlines don't charge extra for luggage, and not all airlines are listed in Expedia.com, so don't rely on that - do you're homework before you book!
Probably the biggest mistake I made planning this flight was the hour. Taking a flight at 11:30AM and landing at 8PM meant actually that I lost a whole day of my trip on a flight, cause besides eating breakfast; I didn't have time for anything. And arriving to NY at 8PM was just enough to take a shuttle to the hostel, settle in and eat dinner. If I was to re-plan this, I would take a flight around 11:30PM or midnight what means I earned a day in LA, and need to leave to the airport after eating dinner. A flight from west coast to east coast takes 5 hours, and the time difference is 3 hours, what means a flight that leaves LA to NY at 11:30 PM will arrive at 7:30 AM. There- earned a day at LA and saved money on a hotel for that night in NY! You've arrived to NY just in time for breakfast and after sleeping on the plain. You might be a bit tired after only 5 hours of sleep, but being tired on the first day in NY will help you loose the jet lag very quickly (trust me, staring at the ceiling until 3AM because you're used to going to sleep at midnight is not fun and you're tired the next day anyway).
Anyway, I hope you can learn from my mistake full journey, I know I have, and plan more thoroughly your flight from one coast to another considering all parts to make yourself a wonderful trip.
