one of Ireland's best live music venues, as well as a nice pub. Dec 17, 2010
This is a great place for live, contemporary Irish music. There are two different venues, one that you enter via a back door into the larger venue, which holds a few hundred. A lot of up and coming bands play here, usually at a reasonable entrance cost (say 10-15 Euro), and there's something on almost every night. At the weekends, there is also regular shows upstairs, many of which are free, as well as midnight sessions from a few of the mid-level local bands. Headlining here for the first time is seen as something of a marker of status for local musicians.

The atmosphere's really nice: there's no barrier between the musicians and audience, and it can often be rowdy, or respectfully quiet depending on the musicians involved.

The pub itself is free in, of course, and a lively watering hole. It gets busy late, and does have a slightly 'cliquey' vibe, though personally I've always found it very welcoming. There are lots of other pubs around that are worth a look, too. The drinks are relatively affordable for Dublin, and has plenty of variety.

In fact, if you like your modern music and want to get away from the tourist-ridden rip off that is Temple Bar, this is about as good an option as there is.
