Must know before travelling to Kenya! Jun 05, 2008
Known traditionally to be one of the most romantic safari destinations in the world, Kenya has in the past few decades lost it's appeal to South Africa. The state of the nation is unsafe due to political corruption, carjackings, muggings and congestion in the parks. Regardless, it is still one of the safari destinations of a lifetime.

If you are planning on travelling to Kenya, which you should by the way, keep in mind that most of the ugliness is in Nairobi the capital city. In fact it has been named "Niroberry" because of the rampant thefts. The countryside however is much safer and more appealing. The fresh energy is evident in the many lodges being built to attract tourism. Conservation of culture and tradition like the Masai one is seen in the 7 tent Mara Plains Camp which carries out game viewing trips to the Masai Mara National Park.

Use a tour operator if you are travelling for the first time. But remember to use a reviewed well known operator otherwise you are in danger of being robbed.

Some facts:

Currency: Shillings

Capital: Nairobi

Language: Swahili and English

Religion: Over 60% Christian

The best times to travel to Kenya is most of the year, however March through may sees the long rains, you may want to avoid those months.

Most countries require a visa to enter Kenya, including the United States. The visa can however be got on arrival at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport. When I was last there, it cost $50 for Americans, check for changes prior to traveling.

There are many domestic flights and charter aircrafts should you need to fly internally. Major roads are paved, but roads within national parks and reserves are unpaved.

Wild game is wild, be mindful not to pet even the most innocent of them. All African snakes are poisonous, do not pet any. Buy medical insurance before traveling.
