We picked up our hire car and headed out over the bridge. Andrew as usual said "we will just see where this road takes us", we ended up in a little town called Leigh, a stones throw from Goat Island ( there is a ferry that goes form Auckland to Goat Island). The dual cariageway north of Auckland didn't last for very long and we had a gentle drive up the East Coast, stopping at a random beautiful place that we found purely by seeing a blue "picnic" sign rather than anything in the guidebooks.  It was really very quiet and a lovely place to stop and despite the fact that it was lovely golden beach in a sheltered cove on a swelteringly hot day, it was virtually deserted, which we felt bodes well for ourtravels in NZ!
