Whaleswim and diving in Vava'u
Whaleswim and diving in Vava'u Neiafu Reviews
Good(ish) diving but amazing whaleswim experience Aug 29, 2012
In Vava'u we swam with the whales and also dived with Dolphin Pacific, one of several operators based in the town Neiafu.
We were lucky to get on a whale-swim excursion as we hadn't booked in advance. We were extremely lucky to find a pod of three whales that allowed us to get up really close, and then entertained us with some breaching. Some people who had been out several times already said that our day was the best one they've had. Operators recommend going three times to ensure a comprehensive experience but it is quite a lot of money to spend!
We did two dives a day after our whale-swim. At both the Gap and North Shore, the water was absolutely crystal clear (60m visibility). But the marine life wasn't there. I saw a white-tip reef shark, sea snake, some lionfish. Fortunately were some interesting swim-throughs at the Gap, and at North Shore I liked how the wall disappeared freakily into the abyss.
In short, while visibility was amazing, there wasn't much to see in terms of marine life. But there was still plenty to see in terms of the underwater seascape and very enjoyable.
