Not cheap, but totally worth it... If you ge thte chance, definately go. Kaikoura's a tourist town, with tourist prices... There's always a good deal to be had at Montieth's though.

This was an awesome experience. The day was really clear and the catamaran ride was really smooth. Planes go up to get an idea where the whales are and then the cat goes to the vicinity. The actual searching for the whales was fun. The cat only goes at full speed when everyone is in their seats so you start off all sitting down until the boat stops and then you can go outside. The captain sticks this thing in the water to listen for the whales to get an idea on the direction we needed to head in. It then comes over the tannoy to get back in your seats so we can speed towards the whale and at that point everyone literally runs to their seats and you take off. This happened quite a few times and provided some serious comedy moments. The chase aside the sight of sperm whales in their natural environment was amazing. We saw 4 whales on the cruise as well as wondering albatross. This was a great way to spend an afternoon.
sweet as!
