Whale Watching Mirissa Reviews
Blue Whales, Sperm Whales, and Dolphins off the south coast of Sri Lanka... Mar 20, 2011
The amazingly gorgeous and low key beach resort of Mirissa, on the south coast of Sri Lanka, makes an idyllic starting point for an exceptional opportunity to see rare wildlife.
It seems as though this is one of the few places in the world where you can see Blue Whales (the largest creature that ever lived, even bigger than the biggest dinosaur) and Sperm Whales (the largest toothed whale, with the biggest brain of any animal, and famous for deep ocean battles with Giant Squid) in the same place. And from December to April you are almost guaranteed a sighting.
It's an early morning wakeup, and onto the boat for about an hour or so journey out to the open water, but with the coast still in sight. You can take the budget trip (recommended) or the more expensive trips (they all go to the same place and all the boats are fine). It's a calm ocean, no sea sick feelings, and very pleasant all around.
Entirely a majestic experience when you see the first sign of the whales, with a spray of water and air shooting up out of their blowholes as they surface from the depths to breathe. The whales are very big, and how close you get depends on the knowledge and skill of your boat driver. We were still some distance off, and it's very difficult to see the face as it's mostly underwater, but you could still see how huge and beautiful these creatures are, so graceful despite their size. And the enjoyable tail flip before diving again. Very nice.
You can also see dolphins here, which was almost the best part of it, as they come up and swim very close to your boat. They are very acrobatic, lots of jumps, and all swimming in sync. Beautiful, friendly creatures as well.
If you are passing through the south coast of Sri Lanka, don't miss this. And stay a bit longer to enjoy the palm fringed, white sand beach and turquoise waters.
