Western Head Trail Isle Au Haut Reviews
Head West, young man. May 28, 2014
One of the better trails I hiked on Isle au Haut, Western Head offers plenty of diversity. The trail length is probably less than 1.5 miles with a fair amount of up and down. Elevation changes may be frequent, but all very gentle, so don’t be alarmed. The scenery shifts from woods to coastal stretches that are both scenic.
Western Head winds along the western shore down to the island’s southern tip and I swore I saw a pair of bald eagles swooping as I neared the bottom. Made inquiries with a park ranger I encountered the next day and she confirmed the sighting, adding that an osprey had just nested down at this end as well.
Final nugget of this pathway is the large, uninhabited island called Western Ear at Isle au Haut’s southern terminus. The water really races through the narrow channel separating the two bodies and between birds and crashing waves it is a satisfying finish.
