WestCord Hotel Noordsee Ameland Reviews
Island retreat Apr 17, 2009
This WestCord hotel (formally a Golden Tulip Dutch chain hotel) has the well sounding name ‘Noordsee’, which means Northsea. However, it is not situated on the Northsea shore, but on Ameland, one of the islands in the Waddenzee. Its actual location though, is not on or near the shore, but about a mile further inland.
To get to the hotel we first had to take the ferry to the island, which immediately gave that relaxing vacation feeling we were after. The 45 minute ferry ride is followed by a 15 minute bus ride to the hotel. Once there, we received a warm and professional welcome. We had to be patient though, all the tourists had arrived on the same boat as we did, so we all wanted to check in simultaneously.
Our room was what one can expect from a four star hotel; tidy and clean, though not too big. All the necessary amenities were there. We had a balcony that offered dune view, but unfortunately we looked out on a building site. The neighbours across the street were erecting a garage. But you can’t hold that against the hotel.
The dune area the hotel is in, is perfect for extensive hikes, but we used the rental bikes that came with our package deal. The bikes were relatively new, in perfect condition and well adjustable. The hotel supplied us with ample routes and gave us nice tips and advice. Choose you direction very carefully; there’s a strong wind blowing on Ameland and after a full day on the pedals it is ever so nice to have the wind in your back, being blown towards the hotel.
Also included in our package was a three course meal in the lovely restaurant. It was served buffet style. That meant we could choose whatever we liked, and wise choices needed to be made, for there were lots of goodies. Not only was the food good, so was the service. After a long day out (with dining elsewhere) we felt like having an ice-cream. The hotel only offer ice-cream on the dinner menu, so we asked if we could enjoy a dessert in the cosy ‘English pub/Yacht club like’ bar. They didn’t hesitate a second to accommodated us quickly.
All in all, our experience at Hotel Noordsee was good. For a Golden Tulip, the room (and bathroom) decoration was a tad outdated. But since WestCord took over, the upgraded much of the rooms. Hikers, bikers and peace seekers; go! This hotel (with swimming pool and sauna too) will fit your needs. Beach lovers, especially those with little children, may want to find something closer to the shore.
