Lions Den Jun 27, 2011
Werribee Zoo is a good day out for the family, if you want to get up and close with a lion, do the Lions Den!

It's a special package that costs $67 and you get to see them up close and personal, less than a meter away!

The size and sound that these guys make is just exhilarating!

expensive & poor Nov 17, 2010
very expensive day for a make-like safari... very few animals, separated by cages, in contrast with a real safari experience.

well marketed, for very little fun. Still, kids will enjoy it.

This isn't a conventional zoo. It began as an agistment area for animals from Melbourne Zoo, and so most of the animals have a lot of space to roam.

Several large paddocks enclose zebra, giraffes, ostriches, kudu, waterbuck, oryx, camels, Mongolian asiatic horses, rhinos, even hippos. The area is so large that instead of walking it, you're taken on an hour-long bus tour.

Once you've finished your bus tour, you can take a short walking circuit to visit lions and cheetahs, and have a closer look at the hippos, zebras, ostriches and African domestic cattle.

There isn't much walking involved, other than the walking track which is optional, so this is the ideal place to visit if you want to see something special without tiring yourself out. You can cover the place fairly thoroughly in about three hours.

The zoo also offers specialised tours; like open vehicle tours that allow you to get much closer to the animals, canoe trips, and overnight stays. You should contact the zoo if you want to find out more.

nah you didn't, but I think I heard about it somewhere, sounds awesome! When I was there, there was a zebra lying down in the paddock, and it had three other zebras standing around it as if they were keeping guard, I wanted to ask the guide what they were doing, but we weren't sitting close enough to her to hear me.

chels, did i tell you i once got to do a post-mortem on a zebra from there? there was nothing wrong with it in the end...it had got put down as it was old and had quite severe arthritis.
