Werfen Vacation Guide
The little town of Werfen is about a 30-40 minute train journey south of Salzburg has several interesting churches. Surrounded by the Austrian Alps, Werfen is the closest town by public transport to reach the nearby attractions of Hohenwerfen fortress and Eisriesenwelt (the giant ice world).
Hohenwerfen fortress is built on a rocky outcrop overlooking the town and dates back to the 11th century. It also hosts Austria's first museum of falconry.
Eisriesenwelt is one of the world's largest cave systems, and is a true wonder of nature. It has dramatic ice formations and superb ice galleries. Some 42km (26 miles) have been explored so far. A scenic walk or bus/cable car journey will take you from Werfen to the entrance in the western wall of the Hochkogel peak. Inside it is very cold so take warm clothes.

A pretty nice, old city, definitely worth a stop over. I was there for 1 night only but it is worth to stay 2 days there. Lot's of things to see and explore. Especially worth to make trips to the mountains around, Königssee, Ice cave in Werfen, ...
In case looking for a cheap hostel: "Stadtalm", directly on the hill, breakfast above the city == lovely ;)
